    Trump plans to appeal tariff decision to the Supreme Court for expedited ruling

    Trump announced plans to ask the Supreme Court to make a quick decision about tariffs. He stressed the importance of getting a ruling soon. Trump warned that getting rid of tariffs could risk making the United States a third-world country. He also pointed out that if the ruling is not in favor of tariffs, the U.S. might have to return billions of dollars since it has already collected about $280 billion in tariffs. We do not know when these proceedings will happen. However, the urgency is clear because of the potential financial impact on the country. With the Supreme Court taking on the tariff case, we can expect a lot of uncertainty in the coming weeks. Market volatility is likely to increase until we know the timeline for a decision. This may lead to higher prices for options on major indices. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) is key to watch. Recall that the VIX surged over 35% in just two days after the lower court’s unfavorable ruling in July 2025. Buying VIX call options or futures could be a good move given this expected volatility. If you’re heavily invested in industrial or tech sectors, now is the time to protect your investment. The semiconductor industry, for example, experienced a 12% rise in supply chain costs in the first half of 2025, according to the latest report from the Commerce Department. Buying protective puts on important sector ETFs is a wise choice. We saw a similar situation during the trade disputes of 2018 and 2019, where sudden announcements led to big market swings. Back then, using straddles on the SPY was a profitable way to capitalize on volatility in either direction. The same strategy could work now as we wait for the court’s decision. The stakes are high. The U.S. has gathered over $415 billion from tariffs since they started in 2018. If the government has to repay even a small amount, it could shock currency and bond markets. This situation isn’t just about the equity market.
