Speculators cut sterling net shorts to 52.2K as inflation cools and GDP edges higher

UK Commodity Futures Trading Commission data showed GBP non-commercial net positions moving less short, rising to £-52.2K from £-61.4K in the previous report.

The latest change points to a reduction in bearish positioning in sterling, with the net short narrowing by 9.2K over the period.

    Shift In Sentiment Among Speculators

We are observing a notable shift in sentiment for the British Pound, as large speculators are covering their short positions. The move from a net short of £61.4K contracts to £52.2K indicates that conviction among bears is fading. This is the most significant reduction in bearish bets we have seen in the last quarter.

This change in positioning likely reflects a more stable UK economic outlook. Recent data for May 2026 showed inflation cooling to 2.5%, below market forecasts, while Q1 2026 GDP growth came in at a modest but positive 0.3%. These figures are tempering expectations for aggressive Bank of England action and are encouraging traders to buy back their pound shorts.

    Implications For Trading Strategies

For derivative traders, this suggests the risk-reward for holding outright short GBP positions has worsened. We believe it is prudent to reduce bearish exposure and consider strategies that could profit from a potential rebound in the pound. This might involve buying GBP call options or selling put spreads to position for a floor in the currency.

Historically, such sharp reductions in large net short positions can precede a significant price rally, as was seen in the turn-around for GBP/USD in late 2022. While the overall position remains short, this could be the first sign of a major inflection point. We will be closely watching the next report to see if this trend of short-covering continues.
