US four-week jobless claims average falls, reinforcing higher-for-longer Fed stance and delaying cuts

The US four-week average of initial jobless claims fell to 203.25K in the week ending May 1. This was down from 207.5K in the previous period.

The drop in the 4-week average jobless claims to 203,250 signals a very tight labor market. This strength makes it unlikely the Federal Reserve will consider cutting interest rates in the near term. We believe this keeps a “higher for longer” policy firmly on the table for the coming weeks.

Labor Market Signals And Fed Policy

This data is particularly important given that the last CPI reading for April came in slightly hot at 3.1%, above expectations. These employment levels are now approaching the tightest labor market conditions we saw back in late 2023. It challenges the disinflationary narrative that took hold for much of last year.

Consequently, we are watching for continued pressure on the front end of the yield curve. Traders should consider positions that benefit from delayed rate cuts, such as selling short-term interest rate futures. Options strategies, like buying puts on Treasury bond futures, could also provide a hedge against yields moving higher from here.

For equity markets, persistent high rates could cap upside potential, especially for growth-oriented sectors. We might consider buying protective put options on indices like the Nasdaq 100 as a hedge against a potential pullback. An increase in VIX call options could also be a prudent way to position for market choppiness ahead of the next FOMC meeting.

Looking back at 2025, the market eagerly priced in the two rate cuts the Fed delivered as inflation cooled down.

Market Pricing And Rate Cut Expectations

However, today’s strong data suggests the economic resilience might force a prolonged pause in that easing cycle. Market pricing, which had pointed towards a summer cut, has now shifted that expectation out towards the fourth quarter.
